The Informal Meeting of Legal Advisers, organized this year by Sweden, was held on 21 and 22 October 2024, marking the opening of “International Law Week.” In hisopening remarks, the Acting Legal Counsel congratulated the International Law Commission on its 75th anniversary, highlighting its pivotal role in the progressive development of international law and its codification.
In keeping with established practice, the Acting Legal Counsel also provided delegations with information regarding recent developments in international law, including the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice regarding the legal consequences arising from the policies and practices of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, as well as those related to international humanitarian law, the safety and security of peacekeepers and the inviolability of UN premises at times of armed conflict.
Other discussed topics included the relevance of the BBNJ Agreement and the recent Summit of the Future, including the adoption of the Pact of the Future which placed international law at the center and stated that every commitment in the Pact is fully consistent and aligned with international law.
