Treaty Section

The Treaty Section contributes to ensuring transparency of the international treaty framework, wider knowledge of the law of treaties and broader participation in multilateral treatiesÌýdeposited with the Secretary-General.

In particular, the Treaty Section:

  • Analyses, registers and publishes treaties and treaty actions pursuant to Article 102 of the Charter of the United Nations;
  • Discharges the Secretary-general's depositary functions under multilateral treaties;
  • Provides legal advice to the Member States, Specialized Agencies, United Nations departments, offices, and regional commissions, treaty bodies, and other entities on the law of treaties, the depositary practice of the Secretary-General, and the registration of treaties under Article 102 of the Charter;Ìý
  • Provides legal support in the drafting of final clauses of draft treaties and international agreements to be deposited with the Secretary-General;
  • Promotes wider participation in the multilateral treaty framework through regular treaty events;
  • Develops and maintains an electronic database and information system to facilitate access to treaty information
  • Organizes seminars onÌýtreaty law and practice at United Nations Headquarters and at the regional and national level; and
  • Prepares legal publications on the law of treaties and studies on the relevant Articles of theÌýCharter for the Repertory of Practice of United Nations Organs.
