On 17 July 2023, the United Nations Legal Counsel, Mr. Miguel de Serpa Soares, delivered remarks on behalf of the Secretary-General at the opening ceremony of the Commemoration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.
In his remarks, the Legal Counsel recognized the central role of the Court in the international criminal justice system and stressed that the goals of the Court to end impunity and promote accountability are closely aligned with the work of the United Nations.聽
The Legal Counsel emphasized the strong relationship between the United聽Nations and the ICC and the extensive support that the United Nations has provided聽to the Court over the years.聽
He also observed that the Court continues to provide an essential recourse to justice for the international community as serious violations of international law continue and accountability gaps persist.
