20th Treaty Event is held during General Assembly High-Level Week
After a two-year hiatus, the Treaty Event made a comeback at this year’s General Assembly. As world leaders gathered in person for the General Debate, 18 Member States undertook actions on a wide array of treaties.
Since 2000, the Secretary-General has invited visiting dignitaries to seize the opportunity of their presence in New York to sign, ratify or accede to multilateral treaties. Over two decades, the annual Treaty Event has become a standard feature of the High-Level Week, promoting participation in over 600 multilateral treaties deposited with the Secretary-General.
It took all hands on deck to ensure the success of the 20th Treaty Event this year. The , supported by colleagues from Protocol, DOS, DSS, DGC and OICT, set up a strategically located office in the Kuwaiti Boat Area by the Delegates’ Entrance. Against the magnificent backdrop of Portinari’s “War and AV” murals, the United Nations Legal Counsel, Mr. Miguel de Serpa Soares, met with Heads of State and Government and Ministers for Foreign Affairs in a series of ceremonies over four days.
From 20 to 23 September 2022, the Treaty Event featured two Heads of State, two Heads of Government, and 12 ministerial-level officials, all demonstrating their commitment to UN treaties.
Matching the Secretary-General’s call for urgent action to boost the SDGs, the Treaty Event highlighted treaties that support the 2030 Agenda, covering diverse areas such as the protection of human rights, including gender equality, environmental sustainability, public health and disarmament.
Significant strides were made in the field of disarmament, with more States joining the , the , the and the.
“We welcome the concrete actions taken by Member States in expanding multilateral cooperation and strengthening the international treaty framework,” said Mr. Serpa Soares.
