2019 International Law Fellowship Programme
From 1听July to 9 August 2019, the Codification Division facilitated the 2019 at the 国产AV Palace in The Hague. The Programme provided comprehensive training by highly qualified international law scholars and practitioners from different regions and legal systems for professionals from developing countries and countries with emerging economies.
Applications were received from 125 countries. The came from Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Bhutan, Bolivia (Plurinational State of), Cabo Verde, Eritrea, Ghana, Jamaica, Jordan, Lithuania, Mongolia, Montenegro, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Somalia, South Africa, Uganda, Uzbekistan and State of Palestine.
The Programme was conducted in English this year and consisted of the following : 鈥淚ntroduction to international law鈥� (L. Boisson de Chazournes, University of Geneva); 鈥淟aw of treaties鈥� (M. Tzanakopoulos, University of Oxford); 鈥淩esearch in international law鈥� (Codification Division, Office of Legal Affairs); 鈥淚nternational peace and security鈥� and 鈥湽鶤Vful settlement of international disputes鈥� (O. Elias, Registry, International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals); 鈥淟aw of the sea鈥� (A. Soons, Utrecht University); 鈥淭he International Court of Justice鈥� (J. Donoghue, International Court of Justice); 鈥淚nternational human rights law鈥� (F. Hampson, University of Essex); 鈥淚nternational humanitarian law鈥� (A. Lagerwall, Free University of Brussels); 鈥淚nternational criminal law鈥� (I. Hrdli膷kov谩, Special Tribunal for Lebanon); 鈥淚nternational environmental law鈥� (J. Vi帽uales, University of Cambridge); 鈥淒iplomatic and consular relations鈥� (A. Miron, University of Angers); 鈥淚nternational organizations鈥� (N. Blokker, Leiden University); 鈥淚nternational trade law鈥� and 鈥淚nternational investment law鈥� (M. M. Mbengue, University of Geneva).
The participants also attended the Public International Law Session of . Moreover, the Programme included study visits with briefings by officials at the , the , the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, and the , as well as a briefing by an official of The Hague Conference on Private International Law.
As one of the participants summarized the overall experience: 鈥淚t was a very impacting exercise both academically and professionally. My knowledge and exposure to international law have been greatly improved. The programme exceeded what I had expected and I am grateful for the opportunity.鈥�
