Work of the General Assembly on violence against women

Work of the General Assembly since 2000

Since 2000, the General Assembly has adopted numerous resolutions and requested the preparation of reports on various forms of violence against women. In 2006, following the launch of the Secretary-General’s in-depth study on all forms of violence against women, the General Assembly adopted resolution 61/143 on the intensification of efforts to eliminate all forms of violence against women. The Secretary-General’s report focused in 2007 on efforts undertaken by the United Nations system and in 2008 on efforts undertaken by Member States.
The General Assembly has also addressed violence against women in other activities, including a on 3 June 2008.

In 1993, the General Assembly adopted the landmark Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women (A/RES/48/104, of 19 December 1993).

In 1997, the General Assembly adopted model strategies and practical measures on the elimination of violence against women in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice as an annex to General Assembly resolution 52/86 on crime prevention and criminal justice measures to eliminate violence against women.
