Title

Coral Vivo (Living Coral)

Identificaci¨®n del obsequio:
UNNY340G

This gift of a tapestry is dedicated to the ocean¡¯s living world and was created by Portuguese textile artist Ms. Vanessa Barrag?o (b. 1992).

This colourful hand-crafted tapestry is both a symbol and warning at the same time. It celebrates the diversity of coral reefs, a rich living habitat of microorganisms and species within the greatest biodiverse ecosystem in the world, as well as alert us to marine threats of climate change and pollution for a call to change our relationship with the world¡¯s oceans.

The artist recovered waste from local carpet factories as raw material and using traditional weaving techniques, such as latch hook, hand-tuft, embroidery, felt and crochet, she highlights the traditional arts of this region.

Born in a seaside town, she is inspired by family, the countryside and the ocean. During her undergraduate and master¡¯s degree studies, she worked in the fashion industry where she noticed sustainability and consumption. She shifted her eco-friendly focus towards textiles and handmade traditional craft making and began her own studio in 2020. Through her work, she asks us to see the impact that mass industries have on ocean life.

This gift from Portugal was given on 18 March 2024 by the Prime Minister of Portugal, Ant¨®nio Costa, and was accepted by the United Nations Secretary-General, Ant¨®nio Guterres.

Ant¨®nio Costa said, ¡°Portugal is a maritime country. The Ocean represents 97% of our territory. The connection between climate change and the Oceans is undeniable. It (the artwork) holds a strong message about sustainability and about ensuring a healthy planet for future generations.¡±

When thanking the artist, the SG said, ¡°Through recycled materials and traditional artisan techniques, you have brought to life the vibrant and organic forms of the ocean. Your inspired use of weaving illustrates the interconnectivity of our ecosystems. Coral reefs are among the most breathtaking, biodiverse, and vital habitats on our planet. And yet, these natural wonders face dire threats. But in this tapestry, we are filled with hope: Hope that we can turn the tide.¡± SG added, ¡°Portugal has long championed global cooperation on ocean protection ¨C including as host of the 2022 UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon. I thank you for this beautiful gift.¡± ?
