On 21 December 2023 representatives from the briefed the UN Security Council’s Counter Terrorism Committee. The delegation, consisting of the Canadian Co-Chair, Associate Assistant Deputy Minister of Finance, Julien Brazeau, and the APG Executive Secretary, Gordon Hook, provided a briefing on the range of CFT efforts taken by the APG over the last five years to address regional terrorism financing issues. The brief included an outline of typologies research projects, mutual evaluation report results on CFT issues, and international cooperation with other bodies including the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the FATF-Style Regional Bodies (FSRBs) and international financial institutions.
Mr. Brazeau discussed the state of compliance by APG countries and jurisdictions with FATF Recommendations 5, 6 and 8 and Immediate Outcomes (IOs) 9 and 10, and noted that the APG needs to do much more in relation to effective mitigation of terrorist financing risks and to countering terrorism financing in the region through the application of criminal justice measures.
Prior to the briefing, the delegation met with Assistant Secretary-General Natalia Gherman, Executive Director of CTED, discussing areas of common interest and collaboration.
