Assistant Secretary-General Natalia Gherman, Executive Director of CTED, professors, and academics at the roundtable discussion on technology and counter-terrorism in China on 3 August 2024.
From 3 to 4 August 2024, the Beijing Normal University College for Criminal Law Science and School of Law, the Beijing Institute of Technology School of Law and the Renmin University of China Criminal Law Science Research Center co-organized the 11th Contemporary Criminal Law International Symposium on “Combating Financing of Terrorism and Facilitating International Counter-Terrorism Cooperation”, in close cooperation with the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED).
The two-day event brought together academic practitioners from all over China and the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia, Japan, the Republic of Korea and, additionally, Serbia and the United States of America.
Assistant Secretary-General Natalia Gherman, Executive Director of CTED, delivered a keynote address during the opening session. In her remarks, ASG Gherman elaborated on CTED’s support to Member States in countering the financing of terrorism and provided an overview of persisting challenges faced by States in this area as well as current trends and threats. CTED experts presented on the Directorate’s analysis of global implementation of Security Council resolution 1373 (2001) and related resolutions, as well as the findings contained in its annual thematic gaps assessments.
Speakers and participants addressed pivotal issues, such as combating the financing of terrorism vis-a-vis virtual assets, public-private cooperation, corporate compliance, and corruption crimes, as well as current practices and issues in promoting international counter terrorism cooperation.
On the margins of the Symposium, ASG Gherman, together with Professor Zhenjie Zhou, Beijing Normal University School of Law, Professor Li Shouping, Beijing Institute of Technology School of Law, and Professor Shi Yan’an, Renmin University of China Law School, convened a roundtable with academics Chen Ran, Zhu Jinyuan, Yang Nan, Han Jinni, Peng Yali, Wang Yijue, Zhang Wanhong, and Zeng Juzhong. Discussions focused on technology and counter-terrorism and allowed for a constructive exchange on a variety of relevant topics, such as cryptocurrencies, virtual assets and terrorism in cyberspace.
