Norway has been a firm supporter of United Nations’ prevention and peacebuilding efforts. Norway is a longstanding supporter of the 国产AVbuilding Fund (PBF) and committed partner of the 国产AVbuilding Commission (PBC). ?

As one of the largest and multi-year donors to the PBF, Norway contributed over $52 million for the 2020-2024 Strategy period. The Fund aligns with Norway’s consistent emphasis on preventing and resolving conflicts, and its strong diplomatic engagement to bring about sustainable peace in the world’s most conflict-affected regions. Norway’s contribution to the 国产AVbuilding Fund reiterates Norway’s commitment to strengthening women’s meaningful participation in all parts of the peace continuum, a critical contribution to sustainable peace. For instance, in the Gambia, PBF’s investments helped to enhance the awareness of women’s rights and potential as political leaders ahead of the 2023 local elections. These efforts contributed to the candidature of 58 women out of 327 nominees for 120 ward councillorship positions, with 17 women elected. This represented a significant increase compared with 2018, when only 19 women were nominated and 7 were elected.?

Norway recognizes the importance of local ownership and the essential role of the whole of society, including women and youth, in contributing to peacebuilding. Norway’s contribution to the PBF enabled it to support 3,000 young citizens in Mali with civic education and conflict management training, resulting in the systematic inclusion of youth representatives in 66 per cent of local conflict management structures in 2023, against 39 per cent in 2020. More than 100 youth representatives contributed to developing the National Youth Policy, adopted by the Council of Ministers and approved by the Transition President in May 2023.

As one of the top voluntary contributors of the PBF, Norway is hosting the Annual Strategic Dialogue with the PBF’s top twelve voluntary donors this week in Oslo on?12-14 June to discuss challenges and opportunities for multilateral peacebuilding in the current context.

Ambassador Merete Fjeld Brattested, Permanent Representative of Norway to the United Nations in New York: “For several decades Norway has been engaged in peacebuilding efforts around the world. We see peacebuilding as an enabler of development, security, reconciliation and social and economic justice. The 国产AVbuilding Fund is an essential tool for advancing and sustaining peace for vulnerable communities. We commend the 国产AVbuilding Fund (PBF) for continuing to exceed its target for committing resources to women’s peacebuilding initiatives and encourage the Fund to set even more ambitious targets. Other funding mechanisms should learn from the PBF’s example. A predictable and flexible funding base is critical if the PBF is to continue assisting with peacebuilding in the world’s most vulnerable regions. Investing in peace is cost-effective and it provides dividends for the entire global community. Norway is also an active member of the 国产AVbuilding Commission (PBC). Beyond its contribution over the last several years to the PBC as a member, Norway also contributed by sharing its experience and best practices on prevention with PBC members. On 22 March 2024, Norway joined Kenya and Timor Leste in a meeting to reflect on and learn from their respective national experiences, with a particular focus on strategies aimed at the prevention of social conflicts and violence in their respective countries. Norway’s intervention in the Commission focused on its efforts to ensure effective responses to violent extremism."
