Summary

Organized by United Nations Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA), United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), International Labour Organization (ILO), and United Nations Development Programnme, in collaboration with the African Union Commission (AU), the 2024 ECOSOC Youth Forum Africa session, is a pivotal event aimed at amplifying the voices of Africa's youth and harnessing their innovative spirit to shape policies and commitments that will define our collective future.

Under the theme "African Youth Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development in Africa," the event will bring together a diverse array of participants, including United Nations system representatives, government officials, African youth leaders, representatives from the African Union Commission, African regional institutions, bilateral and multilateral partners, think tanks, women associations, members of civil society, the private sector, academia, and the media.

Guided by a young African moderator, the session will be interactive and inclusive, fostering discussions that lead to practical, transformative commitments, and policy recommendations. These recommendations will not only inform the statement of the President of ECOSOC but also resonate across key global platforms such as the 2024 HLPF, the 2024 Summit of the Future, the 2024 UNGA, and beyond. 

The opening remarks will be delivered by Cristina Duarte, United Nations Under Secretary-General at the Office of the Special Adviser on Africa, and the Introductory Remarks by Ms. Paula Narvaez, President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. The debates will be moderated by Ms. Chido Mpemba, The African Union Chairperson’s Special Envoy for Youth. Special guests will include Mr. Youssou N’Dour, musician, and Former Minister of Tourism and Culture, Senegal, as well as Mr. Sadio Mané, professional football player, Senegal.
