Jeudi, 22 September 2022 - 1:15pm to 2:45pm

Forging partnerships for the implementation of the Doha Programme of Action for LDCs

The Republic of Malawi, the State of Qatar, and the Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS) are convening a high-level luncheon on the implementation of the Doha Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries during the week of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly on Thursday 22 September 2022, from 13:15 to 14:45 hours.

Background

In March 2022, Member States echoed their commitment to help the world¡¯s most vulnerable countries by adopting the Doha Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries for the decade 2022-2031 (DPoA). The overarching objective of the DPoA is to achieve rapid recovery from the pandemic, build resilience against future shocks, eradicate extreme poverty, and achieve graduation and the Sustainable Development Goals. The Programme represents a new generation of renewed and strengthened commitments between the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and their development partners, including governments, international organizations, private sector, and civil society. The DPoA has six priority areas:

  • Investing in people: eradicating poverty and building capacity to leave no one behind;
  • Leveraging the power of science, technology, and innovation to fight against multidimensional vulnerabilities and to achieve the SDGs;
  • Supporting structural transformation as a driver of prosperity;
  • Enhancing international trade of least developed countries and regional integration;
  • Addressing climate change, environmental degradation, recovering from COVID-19 pandemic, and building resilience against future shocks for risk-informed sustainable development;
  • Mobilizing international solidarity, reinvigorated partnerships and innovative tools and instruments: a march towards graduation from LDC status.

Objective

The high-level luncheon will serve to reinvigorate global solidarity and partnerships for the implementation of the Doha Programme of Action and leverage momentum in favour of the Fifth United Nations Conference on LDCs. It will also facilitate mutual accountability of least developed countries and their development partners for delivering on their commitments undertaken in the Doha Programme of Action. The luncheon will also showcase the renewed partnership between LDCs and their international partners to achieve the ambitious goals of the DPoA as well as accelerated SDG implementation.

Participation

Heads of States and Governments of LDCs and their development partners, UN entities, as well as selected representatives from the private sector are invited. Participating Heads of States and Governments will have the opportunity to showcase national endeavours and ambitions in support of the implementation of the Doha Programme of Action and the SDGs in LDCs.
