Millennium Development Goals Reports

This annual report presents the most comprehensive global assessment of progress to date, based on data provided by a large number of international organizations within and outside the United Nations system. The aggregate figures in the report provide an overview of regional progress under the eight goals and are a convenient way to track advances over time. The report is coordinated and published by the Statistics Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

This annual report is prepared by the MDG Gap Task Force, which was created by the UN Secretary-General to improve the monitoring of MDG 8. More than 20 UN agencies are represented in the Task Force, including the World Bank and the IMF, as well as the OECD and World Trade Organization. UNDP and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs act as lead agencies in coordinating the work of the Task Force.

Reports by the United Nations Secretary-General

This landmark report by the MDG Africa Steering Group, convened by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, lays out practical steps, strategies and programmes – with costings – needed to achieve the Millennium Development Goals in Africa. It was jointly produced and endorsed by the United Nations, the African Union Commission, the African Development Bank Group, the European Commission, the International Monetary Fund, the Islamic Development Bank Group, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, and the World Bank Group.

Regional MDG Reports

A number of reports with a regional focus on the Millennium Development Goals have been issued by the United Nations Regional Commissions:

This groundbreaking report, issued in 2005, lays out a practical plan to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. It presents an overview of the findings and recommendations of the UN Millennium Project, an independent advisory body to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, which was directed by Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs. The document was co-authored by the coordinators of the UN Millennium Project’s ten task forces and Secretariat, building on the contributions made by hundreds of scholars, development practitioners, scientists, political leaders and policy leaders involved since the Project’s inception in July 2002.

The Human Development Report was first launched in 1990 with the goal of putting people back at the center of the development process in terms of economic debate, policy and advocacy. It is an independent report commissioned by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It is the product of a selected team of leading scholars, development practitioners and members of the Human Development Report Office of UNDP. The report is translated into more than a dozen languages and launched in more than 100 countries annually.
