Summary
The draft Addis Abba Accord recognises the critical need to provide sustainable and resilient infrastructure and commits to at least double investment levels. The Ethiopian Government, UNCTAD and WaterAid will co-host an event highlighting the challenges facing developing countries in responding to the challenges of rapid urbanisation and climate change. The panel includes H.E. Ato Kebede Gerba, Ethiopian State Minister from the Department of Water, Irrigation and Energy, and senior representatives from the UN Conference on Trade and Development and the African Development Bank. The discussion will encompass the role of infrastructure in Ethiopia’s Growth and Transformation Plan, the challenges in financing key sectors, including energy, water and sanitation, together with insights from UNCTAD’s World Investment Report. Each panel member is invited to bring a new announcement of their Government’s or organisation’s approach to financing sustainable and resilient infrastructure. The panel will consider what additional interventions are needed to support infrastructure investments, such as steps to build capacity and provide technical assistance. It will also consider the merits of different sources of finance: public, private, domestic and international. Additionally WaterAid will share some of the findings from its urban spatial planning project focusing on four major African cities.
