- Over 200 high-level policymakers and senior government officials with scientists, engineers, innovators, entrepreneurs and representatives of science and technology communities, the UN system and international organizations will meet in Mexico City from 8 to 10 October 2024. They will identify pathways on the use of geospatial information and related tools for sustainable development, under the theme of ¡°Accelerating Implementation: Achieving Resilience¡±.
The Seventh High-level Forum on UN Global Geospatial Information Management will also explore strategies on developing geospatial capacity, leveraging innovative tools and technologies, and fostering partnerships to deliver positive national social, economic and environmental outcomes.
Geospatial information is fundamental to addressing some of the most pressing challenges of our times. New technologies can detect and predict the impact of disasters; assess risks and coordinate rapid responses; and precisely tackle poverty, hunger, lack of health and other deprivations among vulnerable populations. In small island developing States (SIDS), for instance, they can enable detailed mapping of vulnerabilities such as coastal erosion, flood zones and storm surge risks, and early warning systems to mitigate the impact of climate-related emergencies.
Each day of the Forum has a focus; day one will address "Accelerating implementation for the 2030 Agenda and Beyond", day two will look at the topic "Achieving a resilient plant with geospatial information" and the final day will examine "Building a sustainable future: Innovation, Technology and Artificial Intelligence". It will conclude with the presentation of an Outcome Statement to be delivered by the Forum Chair, Paloma Merodio, Vice President of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography of Mexico (INEGI).
