Description
The 2030 Agenda is founded on the principle of the interconnectedness of the three fundamental dimensions of Sustainable Development, economic, social, and environmental. However, one of the challenges many countries and regional platforms continue to face is the application of an integrated approach across all dimensions of sustainable development, which has been further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Across the Africa region, many UN Country Teams have inadequate policy and technical expertise for incorporating environmental dimensions in the country programming response. This is compounded by the weakness and lack of integration of national environmental authorities within the national institutional frameworks and the lack of awareness among other key players, such as policymakers. As the global authority that sets the environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the UN system, and an authoritative advocate for the global environment, UNEP is uniquely positioned to address this problem at global, regional and local levels.
The project aims to strengthen science-policy nexus through the provision of environmental data, and reporting capabilities for countries to foster coherent integration of environmental dimensions of Sustainable Development Goals. The project will enhance the capacity of the national-level actors including UNCTs on the need to integrate environmental dimensions of SDGs in country-level planning and programming processes, leveraging the existing collaborations in key regional and sub-regional fora and frameworks including the UN Sustainable development Cooperation Frameworks. The project will also support countries to develop evidence-based national frameworks and long-term development strategies through conducting sustainability gap assessments and developing dynamic data repository and platform to share project findings.
