Mobilizing Science, Technology, and Innovation in developing countries for the SDGs
Synopsis
The project aimed to mobilize science, technology and innovation (STI) in developing countries by sharing experiences, knowledge and strengthening their capacity to access, operationalize and benefit from on-line mechanisms and databases on STI for the achievement of the SDGs.
The project contributed to linking communities of developing countries to existing or emerging national technology mechanisms, funds, and capacity building programmes, as well as improving STI capacities of stakeholders in developing countries to use and contribute to the online platform, sharing information, knowledge and experience in key strategic STI for the achievement of SDGs.
The main deliverables of the project include:
- Development of the online platform which established partnerships with more than 25 entities active in STI for sustainable development by making their resources available to 2030 Connect users. The launching event was held in July 2020 and attended by 14 panelist/presenters and 286 additional participants from 36 countries. Since then, 2030 Connect has worked with partners to further develop the platform and seek to build a broader user base, laying the ground for future work to expand and improve it and to bring it to communities of potential users around the world.
- A number of capacity-building activities, including workshops and study tours in China, Ghana and Thailand, during which stakeholders and experts interacted with 2030 Connect in different ways and improved their understanding of national STI roadmaps and technology trends.
- The Massive Open Online Course on developing STI Roadmaps in partnership with UNITAR, which was launched in April 2022. It will be an important tool for expanding the roadmaps programme, finding synergies with major UN meetings, such as the STI Forum and the HLPF.
- Contribution to the Global Pilot Programme on Science, Technology and Innovation for SDGs Roadmaps, which was launched in July 2019 by the United Nations Inter-Agency Task Team (IATT) and included a group of six pilot countries, namely Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Kenya, Serbia and Ukraine, with more than 20 countries interested in joining the programme in the future.
- In partnership with the Global Innovation Exchange (GIE) and Results for Development (R4D), the project also organized Innovation Competitions for young entrepreneurs, attracting more than 300 entries, with the winners featured on 2030 Connect.
