High-Level Panel

Background

On 23 October 2019, the UN Secretary General announced the establishment of a High-Level Panel on Internal Displacement tasked with finding solutions to the global internal displacement crisis. The announcement came on the 10th anniversary of the African Union Convention for the Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons in Africa, more commonly known as the .

 

 

Task

The Secretary General tasked the Panel with finding concrete long term solutions to and raising global awareness of internal displacement for Member States and the United Nations to improve their efforts to help all those affected, including both the displaced and their host communities.

 

The Panel began its deliberations in February 2020, drawing together expertise from government, international organizations, civil society and the private sector.

On 29 September 2021, the Panel submitted its report, Shining a Light on Internal Displacement: A Vision for the Future, to the UN Secretary-General.

Announcement of the creation of a High-level Panel on Internal Displacement

The UN Secretary-General inaugurated the work of the High-Level Panel on Internal Displacement on 25 February 2020. The Panel was established to increase attention to the plight of internally displaced persons (IDPs) around the world and identify concrete recommendations to improve the sustainability of responses to internal displacement. Report and Executive Summary of the High-level Panel

Following the release of its report, , the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel on Internal Displacement has called on Governments, civil society, the international community and the private sector to step up collective action towards systematic changes to advance solutions for as many as 55 million people displaced within their own countries.
