Inter-governmental working group begins review of best practices for eliminating racism, intolerance

GENEVA -- The Inter-governmental Working Group on the Effective Implementation of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action begins a week-long series of discussions Monday on best practices in international efforts towards the elimination of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.
The Inter-governmental Working Group (IGWG) is one of the mechanisms established to assist in implementation of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, which was agreed at the 2001 World Conference against Racism.
The IGWG has previously analysed and recommended strategies to deal with issues such the relationship between racism and education, racism and poverty, racism and globalization, racism in connection with health, and racism and the Internet. Its substantive recommendations have provided guidance to the various actors tackling racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.
During its current session, which is the second part of its sixth session, the IGWG will look at implementation of its recommendations and consider approaches that could qualify as good practices.
