Opening Remarks at Scaling up climate action through integrated water and energy solutions: Delivering on the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda

Distinguished Participants,Ladies and Gentlemen,

Welcome everyone to this special High-Level event on “Scaling up climate action through integrated water and energy solutions: Delivering on the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda.”

I wish to welcome in particular the Coordination Director of Itaipu Brazil, Mr. Luiz Felipe Carbonell, and the Coordination Director of Itaipu Paraguay, Mr. Miguel Gomez.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development includes explicit Sustainable Development Goals on water (SDG 6) and on energy (SDG 7) – two critical enablers for sustainable development.

Yet today, over 800 million people still lack access to electricity, and over 2 billion are living in areas of high-water stress. The global demand for water and energy is projected to increase significantly over the coming decades: energy consumption is expected to grow by 35 percent, and water demand to grow by 55 percent.

With global energy-related CO2 emissions reaching historical highs, transforming the energy sector is key for mitigating climate change.

Excellencies,

Without integrated sustainable water and energy systems, the SDGs – including those on poverty eradication, climate action and sustainable production and consumption – cannot be realized.

That is why a coordinated and integrated approach to water and energy needs to transcend national borders. A coordinated approach can help enhance the management of these natural resources for the benefit of those countries and beyond.

I commend Itaipu Binacional for their decades of commitment to an integrated and trans-boundary approach to sustainable development. With its many activities, Itaipu Binacional has helped bring prosperity for the people both in Brazil and Paraguay over the past 40 years.

Its integrated approach on water and energy in the search for sustainable solutions, is indeed innovative. It represents an excellent example of how synergies can be realized by working together towards the objective of achieving sustainable development.

That is why UNDESA is proud to partner with Itaipu Binacional.

Through the “Sustainable Water and Energy Solutions Network,” we are committed to working with partners to identify best practices on the energy-water interlinkages from across the world.

I look forward to a fruitful discussion at this event.

Thank you.
