The United Nations Postal Administration honours the International Day of Older Persons on 1 October with the issuance of three new stamp sheets and a souvenir card.
Older persons are invaluable sources of knowledge and experience and have much to contribute towards peace, sustainable development, and protecting our planet.?
A longer life brings with it opportunities, not only for older people and their families, but also for communities and societies. Supportive environments assist older individuals?in maintaining their activity levels and independence.?
Population ageing is a major global trend reshaping society worldwide.?By 2030, older persons are projected to outnumber youth globally, with this increase most rapid in developing countries.
This demographic shift has significantly transformed the caregiving landscape, encompassing needs, such as the demand for comprehensive healthcare, care, and social support services.
In recognition of these challenges and opportunities, the 2024 UN International Day of Older Persons will focus on the theme "Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide".
The day will highlight the urgent need to expand training and educational opportunities in geriatrics and gerontology, address the global shortage of care workers, and recognize the diverse contributions of caregivers.
The stamps in the denominations of 73?, CHF 1,90 and € 1,20 were illustrated by Christopher Sharp (USA). The stamp series was designed by Sergio Baradat (United Nations).
A souvenir card with a statement by Secretary-General Ant¨®nio Guterres and Junhua Li, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, will also be issued on the same day.
The stamps are available online at and in-person from shops at the UN headquarters in New York, Geneva and Vienna where the stamps can be used for mailing. Follow UNPA on?,?, and?.
