This was a pleasant surprise to all, as the Library did not self-nominate.

The International Legal Research Interest Group stated the selection of the UN Digital Library was: “in recognition that this resource is ‘one-stop shopping’ for primary documents crucial to most areas of international law, as this refines and builds a centralized source for all United Nations documented activity, and so provides legal materials embedded in the context of the work of the entire UN system”.

The Jus Gentium Research Award is granted to the creators— individual(s) or institutions—of non-commercial?online databases freely available to the international law academic and practitioner community as well as to the public, enhancing both scholarship and open access to legal information.

Chief Librarian Thanos Giannakopoulos and Law Librarian Susan Goard accepted the award on behalf of the Dag Hammarskj?ld Library at a special virtual ceremony on 26 March.

This recognition for the contribution of the UN Digital Library to the global international law community is especially meaningful as most Dag Hammarskj?ld Library staff contribute to its development and maintenance.?

It is also a recognition of the partnership with the UN Libraries in Bangkok, Beirut, Geneva, and Vienna.

This award honours the collaboration among UN libraries globally and the diligent work performed by all colleagues: our information technology professionals, the metadata specialists who analyze UN documents and create the metadata, the digitization teams who make accessible older UN documents, our outreach team who promotes the library resources, and our research specialists who help everyone effectively navigate the UN Digital Library through the training programme, and chat reference services.

But most importantly, this is the result of the valuable feedback received by UN staff, which the Library cherishes!
