UN Women has commended the Department of Political and 国产AVbuilding Affairs (DPPA) for its progress in achieving gender equality in 2020.

The department is the first UN entity to meet or exceed the requirements of all applicable performance indicators under the UN System-wide Action Plan (UN-SWAP)?on?Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.

Since its inception in 2012,?the UN-SWAP has facilitated gender mainstreaming through an accountability framework on policy, programme delivery, financial and human resources, communication and coordination.?

In 2020, 70?UN entities reported on UN-SWAP indicators, up from 55 in 2012.

UN Women lauded DPPA’s “perseverance and vigor?in upholding the important work on gender equality and the empowerment of women while facing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

In 2020, DPPA expanded its reach and ensured inclusivity by exploring new pathways for participation through digital inclusion strategies and virtual consultations and engagement. These efforts continue in 2021; DPPA’s Policy and Mediation Division and INGO Build UP just concluded the second iteration of an online dialogue course aimed at enhancing women’s inclusion in peace processes via digital technologies.

Going forward, DPPA will continue to support context-specific high-level strategy meetings to support inclusive peace processes.

“Such meetings help identify key actions and approaches to enhance UN support for gender inclusion in ongoing peacemaking,” said Senior Gender and Political Adviser Lone Jessen.

UN Women highlighted DPPA-DPO’s efforts at work-life balance and its staff-driven “Building our Pillar” programme to foster inclusion and organizational culture change.

Laura Bologna, DPPA's UN-SWAP focal point, stressed that it is crucial for DPPA staff to make full use of the UN-SWAP as a tool to mainstream and integrate gender in all aspects of the department’s mandate.

Laura Bologna, Lone Jessen, Abigail Esther Ruane, Ana Garcia Alvarez and Shaza Suleiman were crucial in reaching this goal.
