Background

A second conference

Five years after the first World Conference to Combat Racism and Racial Discrimination was held in Geneva, a second conference was held in the same city in 1983. 

The adopted by the Conference focused on:

  • Action to combat apartheid;
  • Education, teaching and training to create an atmosphere for the eradication of racism and racial discrimination;
  • Dissemination of information and the role of the mass media in combating racism and racial discrimination;
  • Measures for the promotion and protection of human rights of persons belonging to minority groups, indigenous population and people and migrant workers who are subject to racial discrimination;
  • Recourse procedures for victims of racial discrimination;
  • Implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination and other related international instruments;
  • National legislation and institutions;
  • Seminars and studies;
  • Action by non-governmental organizations;
  • International cooperation.
