UN75: Facing the Challenges of the Future Together

2020 marks the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.听 To commemorate this milestone, United Nations Academic Impact has asked academics, educators and leading figures in the fields of science, technology and innovation to share their views on the multilateral experiment born of war to foster peace, what they see as the role of the organization in the 21st Century and beyond, and what the world might look like in 25 years when the UN celebrates its 100th anniversary. UNAI will be running this series throughout the year and invite you to engage in the global conversation using #UN75 and #ShapingTheFuture

Tackling HIV through Better Nutrition in Africa

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) are still global problems, with Africa remaining as the most affected continent. In this region of the world, according to almost 500,000 deaths in 2018 were associated with HIV and AIDS related diseases despite the investment in Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy and the collective efforts of health care workers. Without incorporation of quality diets, the therapy may not actually help to reduce HIV related morbidity and mortality rates.

Re-examining the Right to Education from a Contemporary Perspective

Education is not only a fundamental human right, but also a prerequisite for everyone to realize human rights for themselves, individually and personally, as well as in the community and society to which people belong. At the same time, education is the basis for realizing a global society of all people. Education and teaching have both a fundamental role to play in creating a just society based on solidarity for all. And, education, learning and humanity are inextricably linked and permeate all spheres of human life.

Andr茅s Bello Catholic University Builds Venezuela鈥檚 First University 鈥淕reen Roof鈥

As part of its 66th anniversary celebration, recently inaugurated the first green roof of a Venezuelan university and the first of its kind that will be open to the public in the city of Caracas. The 330 square meter garden terrace, installed on the roof of the Graduate Studies building on campus, will help to lower the environmental temperature of the building, support energy savings and serve as an outdoor classroom to discuss and debate sustainable development and climate change.

Chandigarh University hosts Conference to commemorate 10 years of UN Academic Impact

To mark the beginning of the 10th anniversary year of United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI), Chandigarh University in Mohali, India organized a two-day conference from 18-19 November, not only to celebrate the successes of this initiative, but also to discuss the way forward for higher education in addressing critical issues. 聽

Ambassador Federico Sales Lotfe, Ambassador of Mexico to India, Ambassador Ashok Sajjanhar, former Indian Head of Mission to Sweden, Latvia and Kazakhstan and Ajeet N. Mathur, Professor at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad took the stage, followed by Prof. R.S. Bawa, Vice Chancellor of the host institution, Prof. Shiv K. Tripathi, Conference Chair.

'I was 20 in 1945': UNAI Hosts its Sixth J. Michael Adams Lecture and Conversation

The sixth United Nations Academic Impact J. Michael Adams Lecture and Conversation was held on 20 November 2019 at United Nations Headquarters in New York. During this year鈥檚 lecture, entitled 鈥I was 20 in 1945鈥, international human rights pioneer Peter Weiss shared his decades of work in international human rights law, and his reflections on what the emergence of the United Nations meant to the world at the time when the Organization came into being.

Opening the lecture, UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications Melissa Fleming introduced Mr. Peter Weiss on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations, 鈥渨hose creation he witnessed against the backdrop of human and economic ruination and whose subsequent history has been intimately intertwined with his own professional life鈥.
