The UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security recognizes the important role women play in the prevention and resolution of conflicts, and also in peace negotiations, peace-building, peacekeeping, humanitarian response, as well as in post-conflict reconstruction.
The resolution urges all actors to increase the participation of women and incorporate gender perspectives in all UN peace and security efforts. It also calls upon all parties to a conflict to take special measures to protect women and girls from gender-based violence, particularly rape and other forms of sexual abuse, in situations of armed conflict.
In the 20 years since the resolution was passed, the UN has worked hard to increase and make effective women participation in conflict prevention, mediation and resolution. Gender advisors and Gender focal points in peacekeeping and political missions across the world help to push the goals of Resolution 1365. They not only advise the leadership of these missions on issues of gender equality, women, peace and security, but they also work with local civil society organizations to ensure the inclusion of women in peace and political processes.
To honor two decades of advocacy,听鈥湽鶤V is My Mission鈥 profiles women in UN peacekeeping missions and special political missions who are working towards a peaceful world:
Fatima Khamis from Sudan
As the Network Engineer for the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), Ms. Fatima Khamis broke cultural barriers achieving success in a field where women are under-represented.
Fiona Beine from Uganda
Working in Iraq as the Deputy Security Advisor for the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) changed Ms. Fiona Beine鈥檚 pre-conceived ideas of working in a conflict zone.
