UN Photo/Paulo FilgueirasAdama Dieng of Senegal has been named as the UN Secretary-General鈥檚 special adviser on the prevention of genocide. A long-time jurist, Mr. Dieng previously was secretary-general of the International Commission of Jurists, helped establish the African Court on Human and Peoples鈥� Rights and participated in the drafting of the African Union Convention on Preventing听and Combating Corruption. In his new position, he replaces Francis Deng.

Just prior to this position, she was deputy head of the UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and before that worked in various UN human rights positions and sat on Algeria鈥檚 Supreme Court.听

UN Photo/Marco CastroMr. Romano Prodi of Italy has been named the Secretary-General鈥檚 special envoy for Africa鈥檚 Sahel region, at which he will work with Sahelian countries and their international partners to address the region鈥檚 crisis, with an initial focus on Mali. Mr. Prodi has had a long career in international diplomacy and in academia. He was prime minister of Italy from 2006 to 2008 and from 1996 to 1998, and served as president of the European Commission from 1999 to 2005.听

UN Photo/Mark GartenAsha-Rose Migiro of Tanzania has been appointed the UN Secretary-General鈥檚 special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa. She previously was UN deputy secretary-general, and in Tanzania served as that country鈥檚 foreign minister, among other positions.听
