On 15 November 2023, Mr. Nicolas Nihon, Director for Counterterrorism and Violent Extremism of the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, briefed the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC). The focus of Mr. Nihon’s briefing was the steps the Kingdom of Belgium has taken to implement the recommendations from the Committee’s 2022 follow-up assessment visit. In addition, Mr. Nihon provided updates on the evolving terrorist threat in Belgium.

Africa is one of the continents of the world most affected by violent extremism conducive to terrorism. In 2021, Sub-Saharan Africa accounted for 48 percent of all deaths attributed to terrorist groups. Effectively countering the threat of terrorism requires a comprehensive approach that transcends borders and involves all relevant actors. To this end, the United Nations in October 2023 launched a Joint Appeal for Counter-Terrorism in Africa that supports 10 joint flagship initiatives across 16 United Nations entities.

On 15 November 2023, the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations and the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) held a launch event for CTED’s report “Towards Meaningful Accountability for Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Linked to Terrorism”. Bringing together representatives of Member States, civil society, and United Nations partners, the event provided participants an opportunity to discuss the findings of the report and their relevance to advancing accountability efforts for sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) linked to terrorism in different contexts.

Acting on behalf of the Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee, its Executive Directorate (CTED) conducted a visit to the Republic of Ecuador from 23 to 27 October 2023. The assessment, which was the first time for Ecuador, covered all relevant Security Council resolutions, including 1373 (2001), 2178 (2014), 2396 (2017), and 2617 (2021).

Academic institutions and the evidence-based research they produce play an important role in supporting the work of the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee and its Executive Directorate (CTED). To exchange information about recent research and emerging issues, CTED organised an in-person gathering of its Global Research Network (GRN) on the margins of the seventy-eight United Nations General Assembly (#UNGA78) High-Level Week. Held at CTED’s offices in New York on 21 September 2023, the meeting included  15 GRN members representing 12 organisations.
