The very first mission of the C-24 was that to the Cook Islands as mandated by General Assembly? of 18 February 1965 by which the General Assembly authorized the Secretary-General to appoint a United Nations representative who would “supervise the elections” to be held in the Cook Islands in April 1965, to?“observe the proceedings concerning the Constitution in the newly elected Legislative Assembly and report” to the C-24?and the General Assembly. The United Nations Representative for the Supervision of Elections in the Cook Islands, one-person mission supported by a total of 5 United Nations observers and staff, visited the?Cook Islands?from 8 April to 21 May 1965.

The most recent visiting mission of the C-24?was to the British Virgin Islands?from 26-27 August 2024 with the objective?to gather first-hand information on the situation in the Territory, focusing on the political developments, including the constitutional review process. In addition, the visiting mission would take stock of the economic, social and environmental situation of the Territory, and make recommendations to further the decolonization process of the British Virgin Islands. The 2024?visiting mission to the British Virgin Islands?was composed of representatives of Saint Lucia (Chair), Antigua and Barbuda, Iraq?and Papua New Guinea.?

The General Assembly annually reaffirms, through its resolution on the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, that United Nations visiting missions to Non-Self-Governing Territories, where applicable, are an effective means of assessing the situation of the peoples of the Territories. In accordance with relevant United Nations resolutions on specific Territories, the General Assembly requests the C-24 to undertake at least one visiting mission per year.
