This unprecedented growth is due to the gradual increase in human lifespan owing to improvements in public health, nutrition, personal hygiene and medicine. It is also the result of high and persistent levels of fertility in some countries.</p> <p class="rtejustify">While it took the global population 12 years to grow from 7 to 8 billion, it will take approximately 15 years—until 2037— for it to reach 9 billion, a sign that the overall growth rate of the global population is slowing.</p> <p class="rtejustify">Countries with the highest fertility levels tend to be those with the lowest income per capita. Global population growth has therefore over time become increasingly concentrated among the world’s poorest countries, most of which are in sub-Saharan Africa. In these countries, sustained rapid population growth can thwart the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which remain the world’s best pathway toward a happy and healthy future.</p> <p class="rtejustify">Even though population growth magnifies the environmental impact of economic development, rising per capita incomes are the main driver of unsustainable patterns of production and consumption. The countries with the highest per capita consumption of material resources and emissions of greenhouse gas emissions tend to be those where income per capita is higher, not those where the population is growing rapidly.</p> <p class="rtejustify">Meeting the objectives of the Paris Agreement to limit global temperature rise, while achieving the SDGs, critically depends on curbing unsustainable patterns of production and consumption. Yet, slower population growth over many decades could help to mitigate the further accumulation of environmental damage in the second half of the current century.</p> <h5>Related links</h5> <ul> <li><a href="/dayof8billion" target="_blank">Countdown to 15 November 2022</a></li> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/undesa_pd_2022_pb_140.pdf">Policy brief</a></li> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/undesa_pd_2022_d8b_press_release.pdf">Press release</a></li> <li>Press conference <ul> <li><a href="http://media.un.org/en/asset/k1n/k1n5kesjvi" target="_blank">Video</a></li> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/undesa_pd_2022_d8b_press_briefing_asg_spatolisano.pdf">Statement by Ms. Maria-Francesca Spatolisano, Assistant Secretary-General for Policy Coordination and Inter-Agency Affairs, DESA</a></li> </ul> </li> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/undesa_pd_2022_d8b_media_advisory.pdf">Media advisory</a></li> <li><a href="/development/desa/un-desa-voice/current">UN DESA Voice</a></li> <li><a href="/development/desa/un-desa-voice/sdg-blog/2022/11#4878">SDG Blog by Dr. Natalia Kanem, Executive Director, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)&nbsp;</a></li> <li><a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2022/11/11/world-population-2022-reaches-8-billion/8323453001/" target="_blank">World population reaching 8 billion: What this means for the family of humanity, op-ed by the Secretary-General (via USA Today)&nbsp;</a></li> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/undesa_pd_2022_the_world_at_8_billion.pdf">The World at 8 Billion. In preparation for the session, the Population Division prepared the report of the Secretary-General on population, food security, nutrition and sustainable development, which was issued in February 20201. Due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the Commission was not able to hold its formal session at the end of March 2020. The Commission decided to postpone a full consideration of the theme to its fifty-fourth&nbsp;session in 2021.</p> <p>The report prepared for the 2020 session focused on four broad themes:</p> <ul> <li>Concepts, measures and state of food security and nutrition</li> <li>Nutrition, food security and population health, including diets, nutritional habits and burden of disease; hunger and undernutrition; and overweight and obesity</li> <li>Population growth, food consumption and sustainability</li> <li>Rural development, population movements and settlement patterns.</li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>To inform preparation of an updated report of the Secretary-General for the 2021 session, the Population Division of UN DESA will convene an expert group meeting on the theme, to be held virtually from 28 to 30 October 2020. The expert group should advise on 1) elements where new data or analysis has become available in 2020; 2) elements that should receive greater attention in the new report; and 3) evidence for impacts of COVID-19 in each area.&nbsp;</p> <h3>Documents&nbsp;</h3> <ul> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/undesa_pd_cpd54_egm_concept_note.pdf">Concept note</a></li> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/undesa_pd_cpd54_egm_draft_agenda.pdf">Agenda</a>&nbsp;</li> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/undesa_pd_cpd54_egm_organization_of_work.pdf">Organization of work</a>&nbsp;</li> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/desa_pd_2020_cpd54_egm_list_of_participants.pdf">List of participants</a>&nbsp;</li> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/undesa_pd_cpd54_egm_speaker_bios.pdf">Speaker bios</a></li> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/files/documents/2021/Feb/egm_population_food_security_nutrition_clean_10feb.2021.pdf">Report</a></li> </ul> <h3>Organization of work&nbsp;</h3> <table border="0" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="1" style="width: 95%;"> <tbody> <tr> <td colspan="2" style="background-color: gold;"> <p><strong>DAY 1: Wednesday 28 October</strong></p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="2"> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>INTRODUCTION, NEW EVIDENCE AND COVID-19 IMPACTS</p> <p>The 54th session of the Commission on Population and Development (19-23 April 2021) will consider the special theme “Population, food security, nutrition and sustainable development”. While the Programme of Action of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development highlighted the problem of undernutrition, today's discussion of malnutrition is broader and includes stunting, wasting, overweight and obesity, as well as micronutrient deficiencies. Moreover, there is an increasing recognition of the challenges to food security posed by factors such as climate change, conflict and economic downturns.</p> <p>Recognizing the importance and timeliness of these topics, the United Nations Commission on Population and Development decided in 2018 that the thematic focus of its fifty-third session in 2020 would be "Population, food security, nutrition and sustainable development". In preparation for the upcoming session, the Population Division of UN DESA will convene an expert group meeting on this topic, to be held in New York from 16 to 17 September 2019.</p> <p>The expert meeting is expected to provide substantive inputs for the preparation of the reports of the Secretary-General on the special theme of the fifty-third session of the Commission on Population and Development. In particular, the meeting will result in draft recommendations on ways in which the Commission can contribute to the international dialogue on the issues.</p> <h3>Documents</h3> <ul> <li><a href="/en/development/desa/population/events/pdf/expert/30/Concept_Note.pdf" target="_blank">Concept note</a></li> <li><a href="/en/development/desa/population/events/pdf/expert/30/Draft_Agenda.pdf" target="_blank">Agenda</a></li> <li><a href="/en/development/desa/population/events/pdf/expert/30/Organization_of_work.pdf" target="_blank">Organization of work</a></li> <li><a href="/en/development/desa/population/events/pdf/expert/30/Report_of_the_meeting.pdf" target="_blank">Report</a></li> </ul> <h3>&nbsp;Organization of work</h3> <table border="0" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="6" style="width: 100%;"> <thead> <tr> <th colspan="2" scope="col" style="text-align: left; background-color: gold; height: 25px;"> <p><strong>Monday, 16 September 2019</strong></p> </th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr> <td style="width: 150px; vertical-align: top;"> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>10:00 - 10:15</p> </td> <td> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Session I: Opening of the meeting</strong></p> <ul> <li>John Wilmoth, Director, Population Division/DESA [<a href="/en/development/desa/population/events/pdf/expert/30/Opening_remarks_Wilmoth.pdf" target="_blank">opening remarks</a>]</li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="1" rowspan="2" style="text-align: left; vertical-align: top;"> <p>10:15 - 11:30</p> </td> <td> <p><strong>Session II: Setting the stage: Trends, concepts, definitions, and data sources</strong></p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <ul> <li> <p><strong>Moderator:</strong> Sandile Similane, UNFPA</p> </li> <li> <p>Nancy Aburto, FAO,&nbsp;Overview of food security and nutrition concepts; hunger and food security indicators: trends and data sources [<a href="/en/development/desa/population/events/pdf/expert/30/presentations/Monday/Session2/Nancy_Aburto_OVERVIEW%20FAO%20v5.pdf" target="_blank">presentation</a>]</p> </li> <li> <p>Ruben Grajeda, WHO AM/PAHO (video link),&nbsp;Nutrition indicatiors: trends and data sources [<a href="/en/development/desa/population/events/pdf/expert/30/presentations/Monday/Session2/R_Grajedar%20-%20Nutrition%20indicators%20and%20Trends.pdf" target="_blank">presentation</a>]</p> </li> <li> <p>Frank Swiaczny, Population Division/DESA,&nbsp;Demographic megatrends and global population growth [<a href="/en/development/desa/population/events/pdf/expert/30/presentations/Monday/Session2/Frank_Swiaczny_UNDESA_PowerPoint_EGM%20CPD53.pdf" target="_blank">presentation</a>]</p> </li> </ul> </td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="1" rowspan="2" style="vertical-align: top;"> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>11:45 - 1:00</p> </td> <td> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Session III: Food security and population change</strong></p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <ul> <li> <p>a. This shift is driven by the demographic transition from high to lower levels of both fertility and mortality. The social and economic consequences of these changes vary greatly across regions and countries.</p> <p>In consideration of these major global demographic trends and their impacts on development, the Commission on Population and Development decided that the special theme of its 50th session, which will take place in New York from 3 to 7 April, 2017, would be “Changing population age structures and sustainable development”.</p> <p>The meeting is to examine the various aspects of this topic, with emphasis on new evidence and analysis regarding the drivers and consequences of the changing age distribution of the population. Participants will review the demographic drivers of changing population age structures and examine the implications of shifts in the population age distribution for government policies regarding health, education, work, social protection and intergenerational support.</p> <p style="background-color: transparent; &nbsp; &nbsp;</h3> <p><strong>International migration is a global phenomenon</strong> that is growing in scope, complexity and impact. Today, virtually all countries in the world are simultaneously countries of destination, origin and transit for international migrants. Traditional migration patterns are complemented by new migratory flows, fuelled by changing economic, demographic, political and social realities. Changing migration patterns affect the size and composition of migrant populations as well as host and origin economies and societies. The rise in global mobility, the growing complexity of migratory patterns and the impact of population movements have contributed to international migration becoming a priority for the international community.</p> <p><strong>The 15th Coordination Meeting on International Migration</strong> will take stock of progress made in implementing the migration-related commitments of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (<a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_cm15_201702_a_res_70_1_e.pdf">A/RES/70/1</a>). The meeting wil also contribute to the implementation of the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants (<a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_cm15_201702_a_res_71_1_e.pdf">A/RES/71/1)</a> by reviewing the substantive preparations for the 2018 intergovernmental conference on international migration, with a particular focus on the global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration (<a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_cm15_201702_a_res_71_1_e_annex.pdf">A/RES/71/1</a>, Annex II).</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <h3>Documents</h3> <ul> <li> <p><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_cm15_201702_objectives_15thcm.pdf">Objectives</a></p> </li> <li> <p><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_cm15_201702_agenda_15thcm.pdf">Agenda</a></p> </li> <li> <p><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_cm15_201702_orgwork_15thcm.pdf">Organization of work</a></p> </li> <li> <p><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_cm15_201702_list_of_participants_15thcm.pdf">List of participants</a></p> </li> <li> <p><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_cm15_201702_informationnote_15thcm.pdf">Information note</a></p> </li> <li> <p><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_cm15_201702_report_15thcm_0.pdf">Report</a></p> </li> </ul> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/development/desa/pd/tags/2017">2017</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/development/desa/pd/tags/international-migration">International migration</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/development/desa/pd/tags/sustainable-development">Sustainable development</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-featured-categories field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Categories:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/development/desa/pd/categories/coordination">Coordination</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/development/desa/pd/categories/migration">Migration</a></div></div></div> Thu, 17 Jan 2019 21:59:00 +0000 MSTOCKTO 617 at /development/desa/pd Commission on Population and Development, fiftieth session (2017) /development/desa/pd/events/CPD50 <div class="field field-name-field-featured-image field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><img class="large img-responsive" src="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/styles/large/public/images/cpd50_558x207.png?itok=W1EQjMIn" width="580" height="215" alt="CPD50" title="CPD50" /></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-date field-type-date field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><span class="date-display-range"><span class="date-display-start">Monday, 03 April 2017 - 10:00am</span> to <span class="date-display-end">Friday, 07 April 2017 - 6:00pm</span></span></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><h5>Changing population age structures and sustainable development</h5> <p>&nbsp;</p> <h3><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/cpd50-members.pdf">Members of the Commission</a></h3> <h3>Bureau members&nbsp;</h3> <ul> <li>Ms. Alya Ahmed Saif Al-Thani (Qatar) - Asia-Pacific Group (Chair)</li> <li>Mr. Lewis G.
