Special Session of the General Assembly on the follow-up to the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development beyond 2014

Overview

The special session of the General Assembly will take place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 22 September 2014. In its resolution 65/234 on the follow-up to the International Conference on Population and Development beyond 2014, the General Assembly decided to convene a special session in order to assess the status of implementation of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development and to renew political support for actions required for the full achievement of its goals and objectives.

Second retreat on Migration indicators for the post-2015 United Nations development agenda

Overview

In July 2014, the Open Working Group of the General Assembly on Sustainable Development Goals proposed a set of goals and targets to serve as the basis for incorporating sustainable development goals into the post-2015 development agenda. The outcome document of the OWG contained several targets which are of direct relevance to international migration, migrants and mobility.

Overview     

International migration is a global phenomenon that is growing in scope,complexity and impact. Today, virtually all countries in the world are simultaneously countries of destination, origin and transit for international migrants. Traditional migration patterns are complemented by new migratory flows, fuelled by changing economic, demographic, political and social conditions. Changing migration patterns affect the size and composition of migrant populations as well as economies and societies in countries of origin and destination.
